Banbury 3 – 4 Oxford
Sunday 9th October saw the first outing for our all-new women’s “Masters” side (that’s the polite name for veterans), also known as the Oxford OAPs. Katie Smith captained Oxford to victory against Banbury in their first round match in the Investec Women’s Masters Cup.
Oxford conceded a penalty flick early on, allowing Banbury to take a deserved lead. They pulled level just moments later though when Jane Grant got on the end of a good ball across goal from Tinny, setting the scene for a highly-charged first half.
Another goal each in quick succession kept the game on a knife edge; Oxford’s second coming in some style as Claire Hooper deflected a hard drive (another great assist from Tinny) from outside the circle into the roof of the goal. (Claire would like to note at this point that, yes, it was intentional!!)
Oxford then took the lead for the first time in the match, with another (less spectacular) goal from Claire. Banbury continued to threaten Oxford’s goal however, and eventually converted one of their many penalty corners to draw level once again.
It was Oxford who had the final word in the first half with Sarah Dawson scoring what turned out to be the decisive fourth goal just before the break. The second half was fiercely competitive, although taken at a slightly slower pace!
Banbury had a penalty corner strike disallowed for being too high and Oxford were unable to convert their only penalty corner of the game. A frantic final few moments of the match kept the game in the balance as Banbury relentlessly attacked Oxford’s goal – it was a huge defensive effort from Oxford though with Katie Smith clearing the ball off the Oxford goal line in the dying moments to ensure that Oxford progress to round two.
Scorers: Jane Grant, Claire Hooper x 2, Sarah Dawson
