Ladies’ 2s v. Witney 1s – 18.2.12 match report
21 Feb
Oxford ladies’ 2s travelled to local rivals Witney 1s in their Division 3A clash. The visitors started well and, although Witney came close at one point, Oxford had more of the possession with Mutsa Mutembwe dominating the game in midfield, with some excellent passing. Oxford eventually took the lead with a goal from Sally Whyte.
Witney, however, then equalised and this set the pattern for much of the game. Oxford added a second goal at a penalty corner when Lyn Cockshott put the ball in the net after an interchange of passes with Sara Morgan. Witney levelled again with another short corner.
Oxford went 3-2 ahead at a penalty corner when Cockshott fired in a shot towards the left post, which Mutsa Mutembwe deflected in. Witney then equalised (from another short corner, just for a change). Shortly before half-time, Oxford went 4-3 ahead after some good work down the right by Whyte, who slipped the ball across to Cockshott, who fired in a fierce shot which was well saved. Helen Backhouse was on hand though to provide a good reverse stick finish to the rebound.
After half-time, the goal-scoring slowed down a little, and Oxford ran out of energy and confidence, allowing Witney back into the game. They took their chances well, converting three more chances, to make the final score 6-4. It had been a very good first-half performance from Oxford. It was just a shame that the game had two halves…
Scorers: Tinny, Mutsa, Sally, Helen
Man of the Match: Katie Cox
