OHC 2s 5-5 Teddington 2s
After a great win on Saturday, the ladies’ 2s went into their Sunday game with high hopes, but no one was expecting this 10-goal thriller!
Oxford took an early lead against the visitors when Tinny latched onto a speculative ball and drove into the D, slipping the ball past the keeper at her near post (in what some might have described as a rather rubbish pass to Kim, but I like to think of as a cunningly-disguised shot). Anyway, within about two minutes, we were 1-0 up, so all was good.
Teddington, however, responded well and capitalised as Oxford temporarily lost all shape and went AWOL with their defending. The visitors replied with three goals, and things were not looking good.
Oxford pulled one back though, thanks to a great finish by Helen, who fired a bouncing ball into the net. Teddington then scored again, to make it 2-4 at half-time – not our best half ever…
Oxford thankfully came out a different team in the second half after some crucial tactical changes from Captain Suzie. Lucy helped to shore up the defence, while Sophie S distributed well in the middle. Oxford piled the pressure on their opponents, with Kim running around like a mad thing and causing them lots of problems and Hayley taking every opportunity to steal the ball as Teddington tried to move it around the back.
It took some time to actually score, but eventually Tinny found the goal again, this time with a fine penalty corner strike (definitely not a pass). She added another when a long ball from Mutsa left her one-on-one with the keeper, who parried her first shot back to her so that she could have another go, which she duly rocketed into the goal.
Teddington continued to battle though and, after finding one of Claire’s perfectly-in-proportion-but-perhaps-just-slightly-larger-than-average feet, they won a penalty corner, which they converted.
Tinny replied with another sweet short corner strike, for an impressive haul of four in the game, to level the scores at 5-5. Oxford had chances to win it with other penalty corners, but a draw was probably a fair result.
Scorers: Tinny x 4, Helen Backhouse
