OHC Mixed v. Abingdon – 10.3.13 match report

Oxford  6-4  Abingdon

“I think we’re both running late!”… “Give us a lift you…” is roughly the conversation that happened as your correspondent overtook Jack cycling up Headington Hill. Despite both arriving after the advertised pushback time, we still managed to be on pitch before co-captain Becky, which turned out to be ideal preparation as OHC Mixed recorded OUR FIRST EVER WIN!!!

Oxford started the first half well, with Jack, Phil and Louisa linking well up front. From one such foray on the right Phil found space at the top of the D for a reverse hit – 1-0 Oxford. Oxford continued to link well in the middle through Steve, Joe, Harry and Sarah, with a neat passing move finding Harry at the left post for the simplest of tap ins – 2-0 Oxford and more importantly Harry’s first ever hockey goal!

Oxford rung the changes (well actually some people went off to warm their hands up) with Kat, Asif and Matt all joining the fray. Another fine passing move again found Harry unmarked for her second – 3-0 Oxford. What followed was a rather muted goal celebration – definitely something for the co-captain to work on!

The game opened out with Abingdon scoring two goals, one where the normally totem-esque Tim decided to move, got confused and fell over nowhere near the ball. Oxford did manage to put Asif through to score a neat finish – what he lacks in pie knowledge he more than made up for in goal scoring. 4-2 at half time.

Roughly 10s into the second half, the returning TC departed with a fresh injury – this time a back injury rather than a mangled hand. Perhaps he should consider boppleball rather than hockey in future! This led to your correspondent being moved to the rather unfamiliar role of centre back – fortunately the twin peaks of Mel and Becky were able to cover for any defensive weaknesses.

With Matt, and then Paul playing well in the middle, the game continued to flow from end to end. Abingdon were able to score two more goals, but Jack was also able to add a couple, meaning that the game finished Oxford 6 – 4 Abingdon, and hence OHC Mixed won their first ever game – may it be the first of many!
