The mighty Oxford ladies’ vets team marched through to the finals of the EHB Over 35s Trophy this week, without even breaking into a sweat! They’re now preparing themselves, with their usual intensive training regime, to face Hereford Vets in the final at Beeston H.C. (Nottingham) on Sunday 28th April.
Sadly, the semi-final v. Holcombe fell victim to the snow just before Easter and then the opposition were forced to concede the match after being unable to field a team on the slip date. Oxford also got a walkover in the quarter-finals, when Shefford & Sandy were unable to get a team out to play.
Oxford, however, have managed to play at least one game so far in this tournament: a first-round ‘convincing’ win against Northampton Saints. The game ended in a 3-3 draw after extra time, and the deadlock was only broken on sudden death penalty flicks.
Oxford’s over 35s ladies’ team only came into being last season, when they beat Banbury in the first round to claim the title of ‘Oxfordshire champions’. They were then knocked out by a very good Epsom side, but kept their enthusiasm and enjoyment going, despite the rather high scoreline.
Captain Katie Smith is happy to confirm that the over 35s are Oxford’s only undefeated senior team so far this season, and still in with a chance of silverware!
