Oxford 4-3 Hawks
Oxford scored the first goal after 28 seconds, with Greeners taking to heart the wise words of Matt Beynon before the game started – “take quick free hits”. He drove straight at an unprepared Hawks defense and gave the ball to Ben White who crossed it in for a deflected own goal.
The game from there was very competitive as Hawks got more into the game forcing several great saves from Matt Hogben in goal. They were putting Oxford under pressure, especially going high on the Oxford defensive which resulted in long balls out despite Niall doing shuttles at right back. Hawks got a goal with a very well worked break away, however Oxford replied straight away via the juggernaut Ben White chasing lost causes who won the ball off the Hawks defense and passed it to Andy Small to tap in.
Hawks started the second half much the better side, really putting a lot of pressure on the Oxford back line who did well to hold firm for so long before Hawks scored a short corner. That woke Oxford up and after a goal mouth scramble Dave Hibbert flicked the ball into the net. Oxford had several more chances to put the game to bed, the unfortunate James Neilson scoring 2 goals only for the first to be disallowed for hitting Dave Hibbert’s foot on the way through and the second for clipping Andy Small’s foot (which the umpire missed until Andy owned up).
Hawks scored another short corner with about 10 mins to spare and then Oxford were down to 10 players when Greeners was sent off for pushing, but Andy Wynd came off the bench to score through the keeper from a tight angle right at the death.
Like any Oxford derby this was not a pretty game but it was very competitive and hard fought.
