Men’s 1s v. Burnt Ash 1s – 20.10.13 – Match Report

OXFORD HC MEN’S 1S THROUGH TO THE SECOND ROUND OF THE ENGLAND HOCKEY MEN’S TROPHY COMPETITION. NEXT MATCH ON SUNDAY 17TH NOVEMBER AGAINST TULSE HILL & DULWICH 1S.

Oxford 4-2 Burnt Ash

And so to Sunday, as Oxford welcomed an unknown in Burnt ash 1s to fortress Brookes.

Burnt Ash started the game at a high pace, pressing Oxford hard in defence and preventing space for attacks to be built. Oxford were able to counter this press with some great clearing balls from the back, and soon got themselves forcing the away side back.

Oxford took the lead when Will Phillips on his 1s debut took a quick free hit, drove straight into the D and fired past the keeper on his reverse. This opened the game up, and following more good work from the forwards Dan Smyth found himself in space in the D and having beaten the keeper rolled the ball into the empty net to put Oxford 2 up.

Burnt Ash hit back towards the end of the half, a mix up in defence left the forwards 3 on 1, and despite Mitty doing well to prevent the initial shot and slow the man down, he lofted the ball over the keeper and the covering defenders to put them back in the game. Oxford however restored their 2 goal lead at the end of the half, Dan Bleach continuing his goalscoring form deflecting one home from a short corner.

Both sides started the second half with renewed efforts, but it was Oxford who extended their lead through Bleach again. At 4-1 Oxford looked comfortable and like they would go on to win by more, however Burnt Ash got a goal back from open play to leave the game poised.

Oxford also gave a debut to young keeper Callum and he was called on to make a couple of smart stops to preserve the lead, and despite a yellow card for Eamon Devaney Oxford held out the opposition to seal a place in the next round.
