MAC ATTACK PULLS OHC BACK FROM BEHIND
Oxford 6-1 Witney
Winter had definitely arrived in MMBO Premier as Oxford travelled to Witney for game 7 of the season. On paper this game was top versus bottom but OHC knew that Witney would come out all guns blazing and despite a good warm up, in the first ten minutes the home team were the surprise 2-0 leaders.
A few personnel and positional changes were made and OHC gradually started to control the game, move more and generate more chances. With Mitty and Benny still discussing the utilisation of the reverse stick lob, Oxford got one back as Will took his goal well and celebrated with the standard celebration when your team is behind and struggling, a finger on the lips.
Chances started to flow for Oxford and with this came short-corners. Macca converted to draw his team level at 2 each, before Captain McKeown (rumoured to be under pressure from Fish, as the team’s number one drag-flicker) clattered the ball home once more to dispel such tattle.
The ever industrious Dan Bleach was next on the score sheet, always willing to get in the danger zone “Bleachy” has been a goal scoring machine this season and his form continued as Oxford took a 4-2 lead into half time.
The half-time team talk was based around 1) don’t go back to sleep like the start, 2) don’t let them score, 3) do score lots more ourselves. However despite early chances to add to the Oxford total, Witney were first to find the net in the second half (3-4).
With the Blues pressing well and generating chances, the pressure told and the umpire awarded a penalty flick. It was reported (to the author, by the team after the match) that the flick was saved onto the post, unfortunately as the author was also the flick taker, such events have been banished from his memory.
With Witney still in the game at 4-3, OHC needed to put the game to bed. Having failed to do this from the penalty spot and then some fairly lacklustre finishing in open play, it fell to Bleach and McKeown to seal the win with a well-taken further goal apiece as Oxford ran out 6-3 winners.
Oxford are now 4 points ahead at the top of the MBBO Regional 1 table and are determined to extend this as the Christmas break approaches.
Final Score: 6-3
Goal Scorers: Matt McKeown (3), Dan Strange (2), Will Phillips
