Oxford 5-0 Gerrards Cross
Oxford were looking to get back to winning ways after their first defeat of the season against Milton Keynes last week, with passion and commitment being the key messages from coach TC.
All eyes were on Ben White as booky Griffiths took bets on whether he would score during the game. Talk of a good breakfast followed by a quality warm up meant odds were looking good as the game began.
Gerrards Cross were fielding a young team and this showed in the early stages of the game, with the majority of possession and 50-50 balls going the way of Oxford.
It took till midway through the first half for the breakthrough though, as a fine move involving a number of the Oxford forwards ended with Andy Wynd finishing well. Oxford continued to press and two assists by Andy Small were finished by two subtle ‘Berbatov’-esque finishes from Nick Greenwood either side of half time to extended the lead to 3-0.
Oxford continued to press as the opposition continued to find it hard to contain the good movement and passing of the home team. A number of short corners ended with Rob Griffiths getting on the score sheet, with a neat low finish at the near post.
With 10 minutes to go and the game all but over, all eyes turned back to Ben White. Pressure was clearly playing a factor as he had missed a couple of chances that a player of his quality would have normally taken. Central defenders Chris Way and Matt Benyon had invested interest in seeing Ben White succeed, however they did not end up being involved in this dramatic final moment of the game.
What followed was a blur of passes with the ball somehow finding its way to Ben White in the D. The low finish was emphatic, sending wild celebrations across the pitch, except for that of Rob Griffiths who sunk to his knees in despair.
All in all, a solid performance from Oxford, and one that they will be keen to take forward into a difficult away game against Newbury next weekend.
