Oxford 1-2 Wokingham
We turned up on a grey cold afternoon, at Wokingham, to play second placed team who we had beaten earlier in the season, knowing that a win would take us second place in the league.
The game was quite even in the first 15 minutes, when we were playing some attacking hockey with Holly, Niki, Mell and Jen linking up well down the pitch. We were caught on the break with a hard hit up into the D to their unmarked, fast CF who struck first time from the top of the D to leave Laura no chance of saving, with a well taken goal.
Oxford then started moving the ball around well in the midfield with Charlotte linking up well with Pip and Emma, driving the ball forward to find Leoni in the D who had a few shots saved but we were unable to maximise the pressure.
Oxford 3s, the same top classy team that beat Hawks last week, didn’t seem to have turned up today, but we kept fighting, and working together with our great team spirit. Wokingham scored a second in the first half making the score 2-0.
Oxford came out in the second half with much more determination and a good run of play moving the ball out of defence, with Donna and Suzie attacking and linking up, as we had nothing to lose, Pip made a run up the left hand side and crossed the ball to Jen on the top of the D who struck at the goal, where Holly followed up and scored, only to have the goal disallowed for apparently a foot!!!! Holly then went off injured, shortly after Emma slid across the pitch, in determination or desperation and seemed to stay there for a while (unlike Emma, the not getting back up – not the sliding across the pitch!)
Oxford then started to work better together moving the ball out well and Michelle defending well against their strong pacey, youngsters down the right, we defended well against a few short corners, with some good saves from GK Laura.
Laura Pang found Suzie to move forward up the pitch taking the ball, around a defender into the D and having a shot on goal, the GK saved and kicked the ball out of the D, which Charlotte picked and fired the ball back in, this took a deflection from a Wokingham defender into the net making it 2-1. Oxford had started to come back into the game, unfortunately a bit too late, the final whistle was blown with score 2-1.
