Oxford Ladies 4s 3 – 1 Sonning 3s
After finding their mojo on the coldest, windiest hill in Wycombe the previous week (7-0!), Oxford Ladies 4s were raring for another win at Headington Girls School. This week’s line-up was fairly unrecognisable with lots of shuffling down from the 3s, so a quick round of introductions was needed before pushback (Sarah almost receiving DOD for forgetting her own name!).
Finding the back of the goal proved elusive in the first half with LOTS of frustratingly close goal scoring opportunities from the home side, particularly from Ellie (hence the DOD nom that earned me the ‘honour’ of writing this match report, despite cries of tactical fantasy league voting) but also near misses from Katriona, Beks and Sophia. Maya and Sophia worked particularly well together in the midfield (it’s almost as if they are related…). Charlie wasn’t left bored in goal, saving a few breakaway opportunities for Sonning – perhaps the opposition were terrified of catching the raging tonsillitis that reduced Charlie to the quietest we’ve ever known! Captain Jose defended a shot off the line in mid-air too. Despite lots of Oxford chances, it was nil-nil at half time.
The second half got quite physical. Beks was lucky not to be given a 2 minute break/DOD for appealing to the umpire a fair few times… Kirsty, Sarah and Kate worked well at the back to calmly distribute the ball around the renowned Sonning press, with Pip and MOM Katie B doing sterling work in the midfield. At one point Charlie came out really flipping far (= technical hockey term) to defend, with Jose forced to defend the goal line – the Oxford supporters and subs on the sideline could hardly watch!
In a brilliant tactical decision to confuse the opposition, Annie pushed up to the forward line, drove up the right hand side, and crossed the ball on the reverse, hitting the defender’s foot and into the air. Ellie “right place right time” Gilroy took advantage of her summer cricket training and drilled it into the goal mid-air. Howzat – 1-0 to Oxford.
This (literally) got the ball rolling – shortly afterwards, Sonning equalised from a short corner. Never fear – we had gained the momentum and Annie again pushed up and crossed it to Beks, who took full advantage – 2-1 to OHC.
The momentum was with Oxford by now and in the last 5 minutes or so a short was awarded. Injected by Beks, Katriona hit it towards goal, and in the ensuing goal-mouth scramble Ellie put it past the goalie. Final score: 3-1 to Oxford. Onwards to top of the table Wallingford next week.
