Ladies 1s v. Marlow 1s – 30.01.16 match report

Saturday 30th January 2016

South League Div 2

Marlow 2, Oxford 2

Despite recovering from a 2-0 deficit to gain a draw, ultimately Oxford will see this as two points dropped against bottom of the league, Marlow.

Oxford started well, keeping the ball for periods whilst the Marlow defence were happy to drop off into their half. However, with their first attack, Marlow forced a penalty corner that hit the bar and the resulting rebound was put away by the Marlow forward who was quicker to react. Marlow now began to dominate possession and with their next attack again forced another penalty corner that they drilled into the bottom left corner giving Emma Henriksen no chance in goal. Oxford then upped the pace of their game and in the 28th minute a fine sweeping move was sweetly finished by the hard working Catherine Reaney from close range. Oxford now had their tails up and three minutes later forced a penalty corner that found the foot of a Marlow defender on the line. Kim Haynes duly despatched the resulting penalty stroke to level the scores.

In the second half, Oxford looked a lot more in control but the visitors were still vulnerable to the counter attack losing the ball in dangerous positions and conceding six penalty corners, none of which Marlow converted. Oxford threatened on many occasions to take the lead but could not quite find their composure in front of goal to beat the Marlow keeper who had a great game saving seven shots on target. Likewise this was matched by Emma Henriksen who made several important saves to keep the home team out.

So the game ended in a draw, and Oxford must now find points elsewhere to avoid the possibility of relegation.

Scorers: Catherine Reaney, Kim Haynes
