Ladies 2s advance to quarter-finals of 2nd XI Plate competition!

Oxford  4-1  Bath Buccaneers

This Sunday the Ladies 2s faced Bath Buccaneers in the second round of the plate. Bath Buccs play four leagues above Oxford 2s, and we knew that it was going to be a tough game if we wanted to make it through to the quarter finals. The team talk before the game took a slightly different slant to normal, with motivational words being spoken in the form of poetry from Tanky and Niki. However, it appeared to work and we took the game to the Buccaneers, putting them under pressure from the off.

For the first 10 minutes Oxford controlled the game, working the ball well around the pitch. With the majority of the possession, it wasn’t long before we won a short which was slipped right to Chloe (man of the match) who hit the ball across the goal for a deflection from Laura. 1 – 0 up and despite a lot of opportunities and all the play, Oxford failed to score any more before half time.

Knowing that Bath Buccaneers would come fighting back, Oxford raised their game in the second half. With great play through the midfield, Chloe drove the baseline to slip the ball to Lara who tapped it past the keeper. With a two goal lead, we settled into our play and created several opportunities; Tanky successfully taking on two of the Bath players with the keeper pulling off some great saves. The third goal came from good link play between Meg, who passed the ball in to Chloe who slipped it across the goal for Lara to score.

Bath Buccaneers then found their form and started to increase the pressure on the Oxford defence. With several saves from Phil and good play from Lizzie, Claire, Corin and Ruth round the back, we managed to hold off the opposing attack allowing us to regain our composure. Lammey controlled the midfield and soon won a short corner which was saved off the line by the defender. Quick to counter attack, Bath took the ball up the other end of the pitch and managed to score.

With minutes to go and Bath continuing to apply the pressure, great distribution out of defence found an early ball through to Chloe in the D, who was swiftly taken out by the keeper and awarded a penalty stroke. Tanky calmly slotted it past the keeper taking the score to 4-1.

It was a fantastic team performance, with great work rate all round.
