Ladies 2s v. Reading 2s – 13.2.16 match report

Oxford  1-1  Reading

This was a tough fixture for the 2s against Trysports Prem 1 league-leaders Reading, who haven’t lost a game all season. Confidence was high though, following last weekend’s double victory (10-1 on aggregate), and Oxford started really well, more than matching Reading and winning most of the 50:50 balls.

Laura did try and even things up by almost scoring an own goal, but Phil’s diving save just kept the ball out. It was still a little bit of a surprise when we went 1-0 up. The ball came to Niki at the edge of the D and she took a quick snap-shot on the turn. Even more surprising to her was that Chloe had swooped onto the ball to deflect it in and give the keeper no chance – Niki was still convinced that it was her goal after the game finished. Never mind – it was a fine assist….

Although Oxford continued to battle hard, right across the pitch, the scores were level before half-time when Reading capitalised on an Oxford mistake to overload our defence.

In the second half, there were a lot of short corners. None of them were for Oxford. Luckily Phil was very good at saving them, and the defence generally worked their socks off – particularly Ruth with some amazing last-ditch tackles and Lizzie who was up against a very speedy right winger. Oxford did have some good possession and nice moves, with Martha working really well in midfield to set up play and driving runs forward by Laura and Tanky, but it’s fair to say that we weren’t forcing too many saves from the Reading keeper. Still, it was another strong team performance and sees the 2s stay in 4th place in the table, one point ahead of Hawks (but with a game in hand).
