South League Division 2
Oxford 5, London Wayfarers 0
Oxford saved their best performance for the last game of the season storming past 3rd placed London Wayfarers with an emphatic victory.
From the first moment of the game Oxford looked sharp and hungry for the ball putting the visitors under pressure with their quick passing and movement. In the fourth minute they took the lead when an excellent run and cross from Catherine Reaney was fired home by Estelle Strambolie past the stranded keeper. Annabelle Denly always looked dangerous going forward and after having a shot saved in open play doubled the lead with a clean finish from a well worked penalty corner. A minute later, another sweeping move down the right was finished with an amazing overhead smash by man of the match Kim Haynes to make it 3-0. Despite conceding a series of penalty corners, Oxford’s defence held firm and another quick break saw them extend their lead further when Reaney was again on target deflecting home a shot from Haynes.
After such a dominant display in the first half, the second half was much more evenly balanced with Wayfarers winning another sequence of penalty corners which they failed to convert with Phil Swindell making some great saves. Late in the game Reaney had another clear chance that she fired over the bar, but it wasn’t long until the home side completed the rout when Denly again skipped past the Wayfarers defence on the right to deliver a perfect cross for Haynes’ second goal and Oxford’s fifth. It was a great display of counter attacking hockey based on an excellent team defence.
The result means that Oxford retain their place in the division for another season. Played 18, Won 5, Drew 4, Lost 9, Goals For 37, Goals Against 42
