Aylesbury 2 – 4 Oxford
After assuring our Naval Officer that playing on a RAF base wouldn’t be the end of the world and the shower beers loaded in to the car the team set off. The game started well for Oxford after Bleachy the Oxford version of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just without the baby face rescued Tim’s embarrassment after hitting the post from a yard out. With Oxford dominating possession and Aylesbury being forced back into their own half our wing backs pushed high up the pitch with Guy resembling a young Lee Dixon almost getting himself on the score sheet before Bleachy put away another goal mouth scramble to make it 2-0 within ten minutes. The rest of the first half was looking a little frustrating for Oxford as a number of chances went begging but Chris rescued the half to score a Tony Yeboah screamer reverse stick shot to open his Oxford account (take note Conor).
At 3-0 at half time Oxford were hoping to put in another dominate second half display and put a big score on the board with Lawrence wanting a clean sheet performance and a return to his usual Peter Schmeichel performance opposed to last week’s more Bruce Grobbelaar effort. Sadly, the second half display wasn’t what was required with only Bleachy completing his hat trick to add to the goal tally for Oxford from what I assume must have been another goal mouth scramble. It seemed that Oxford became a little complacent with the ball and Aylesbury now in full counterattack mode had the Oxford defence over loaded and only a man of the match performance from Paul (shower beers) which reminded me of Tony Adams kept Aylesbury at bay. Two late goals were conceded as the defence found themselves overloaded. Still plenty to work on in the coming weeks chief of which must be our short corner variations.
