VACANCY: Volunteer as Social Secretary for Oxford HC

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join the Oxford HC committee to help organize social events for the club.

The role involves running a number of social events throughout the year including the Christmas social and the annual dinner dance. No previous experience necessary and you’ll be fully supported by the committee in all aspects of the role.

You will also have the opportunity to bring your own ideas to the role and run social events that you think will appeal to the Oxford HC community.

If you are interested either as an individual or as a social secretary team with friends please contact Rich Oakes at richard.oakes@environment-agency.gov.uk (Club President).

How to apply for a Brookes Parking Permit and avoid parking charges

Parking is permitted at any Oxford Brookes car park outside of peak hours (16:31-06:59 Monday to Friday, all day at Weekends and Public/Bank holidays). The charges are summarised below:

  • Sports members wishing to park at Oxford Brookes will be required to purchase a parking permit (£10 annually). Parking will then be free outside of peak hours.
  • Occasional sports users (those without sports membership) may park at any site during non-peak hours. The first two hours’ parking is free, with stays of longer than two hours attracting a charge.
  • All Users will need to input their vehicle registration into the parking machines upon arrival (even if parking within the free two-hour window) to avoid a fine.

You can find out more information about the policy here.

It’s worth all OHC members who park at Brookes becoming sports members (free) and then buying an annual £10 parking permit to avoid the off peak charges. Please note: any Oxford Brookes student or staff who also has a sports membership is not permitted to apply for a Brookes Sport and Leisure permit.

The process to apply is complicated and requires a manual response from Brookes, so do not leave it to the last minute!

  1. Become a sports member of Brookes (if not already) and get a membership number. Apply here, select site “Headington” and then fill in your details. You will be sent a “PIN” to act as your password via email. Sign up as a “Pay As You Go” member. If you are a sports member who can’t remember their log in details contact the Centre for Sport reception on 01865 484373 or headington.sport@brookes.ac.uk.
  2. Separately sign up to the Brookes University parking permits site here. This requires the creation of a new account and password.
  3. Apply for the permit. You will be sent a confirmation email from the parking permits site (note – this might end up in your junk mail!) with a link to confirm your registration. This will take you to the page to apply for the permit – select the “Sport and Leisure” permit. It is at this point that you will need the Brookes Sport Membership number you were given at stage 1. Ensure you quote your membership of Oxford Hockey Club in the application as they refer all applications to the club. We check the application against the membership database. At this stage you have made an application for a permit.
  4. The final stage requires you to pay for the permit – you will receive an email in due course with details on completing this final stage should your application for a permit be successful (which it should!). The permit you are given will run for a year and is a virtual permit – there is no printed permit to display.

All queries should be directed to the Brookes Transport Services Team, transport@brookes.ac.uk and 01865 484647

Tim’s Mixed Mash-up Tournament

On Sunday 23rd July we’ll be hosting a mixed tournament in honour of our keeper Tim Bence who sadly died earlier this year.

The tournament will be at Oxford Brookes, with games starting at 12 and in honour of Tim we’d like to be a little bit different. Tim played for many different teams, so in keeping with this, we’d like everyone who wants to play to turn up on the day where we’ll mix up the teams. If you are hoping to play we would ask for you to arrive before 11:30 in order to allow time to sort teams on the day.

This will be a great way to meet some new people from different clubs, play some fun hockey, and remember a great character from our club.

The plan is to ask everyone who plays to contribute £5, we’ll also organise a few fund-raising things on the day too, including a BBQ.

In order to make sure we’ve got enough food, and to help organise the smooth running of things on the day, please could you let Harry Bryant know if you plan to come by emailing her: harriett.bryant.88@gmail.com

Ladies 1s v Banbury 28.01.17 Match Report

OHC L1s 1-4 Banbury: South League Div 2

OHC L1s played Banbury at home on Saturday, and the game was closer than the scoreline might suggest. Banbury started the game strongly, with some aerial balls finding their players up front, and they were first to score after a goal-line scramble. The game was pretty even after that point, with chances for both teams, until Banbury won a flick which Emma Henriksen, who had a great game in goal, came close to keeping out. Oxford then rallied, and a great ball in from Beth Williamson was slotted home by Christy Barnard to make the score 1-2 at half time. It was nearly 2-2 after a Meg Scott deflection went agonisingly wide.

Oxford started the second half the stronger, with Amy Litchfield and man of the match Floor Timmer going close, but Banbury then won another flick which they duly converted and Oxford received a yellow card for their troubles, but played well with 10 men showing good composure on the ball – Williamson, Scott, and Jess Upjohn linking well down the left. Banbury got on the end of an OHC clearance towards the end of the game and finished it to make the final score 1-4, despite a hard-working, spirited performance for Oxford who travel to Epsom next week hoping for some points.

Scorer: Christy Barnard

MOM: Floor Timmer

Ladies’ 3s v. 2s – 28.01.17 match report

Oxford 3s  3-1  Oxford 2s

Given the respective positions of the two teams in Trysports Prem 1, on paper it looked like the 2s were a safe bet to take 3 points this weekend, despite missing 2 or 3 regulars. And, for the first ten minutes or so, we (the 2s) did start strongly, passing the ball around well and dominating play. There were a few efforts on goal, and the first short corner in our favour. Ladies O35s v. Barnes – 27.11.16 match report

Oxford  2-9  Barnes

Due to a slight underestimation by our captain of London traffic, our final 3 players arrived at the pitch with a whole 60 seconds to warm up before taking on Barnes in the Over 35s Shield. Barnes sadly hadn’t tired themselves out with their rather lengthier warm-up and came out at us very fast – fast, and young, and skilful. Continue reading
