Mens 1s v Wycombe 1s 15.10.16 Match Report

Oxford 1s 2–1 Wycombe 1s

15 October 2016 saw Oxford 1’s climb to 4th in the table after beating Wycombe 2-1. After a grey and overcast morning, we were greeted by here comes the sun for a bright and glorious afternoon for hockey. The game started well for Oxford having the lion’s share of possession but it was Wycombe that broke the dead lock as our Naval Officer got all lost at sea and turned over possession midway through what was clearly going to be a massy run but sadly the result was a Wycombe over load which was converted to leave us 1-0 down at half time.

The always motivational and passion filled half time talk delivered by Macca focused on themes of, we can work it out, come together and all together now. These insightful thoughts produced a revolution and Oxford scored two unanswered goals in the second half though the goal machine that is bleachy. But we should mention a great performance from our Laurence who must have been inspired by the visit of his girlfriend to the side lines, yes I saw her standing there to deny Wycombe on countless occasions clearly all you need is love on the side line to have a stormer of a game. Niall or Nail was here there and everywhere on the pitch to show us that he is not just the worst dressed in the team but can be useful on the pitch. The Wierszycki brothers managed to get back and help the defence out on a number of occasions. Tim our nowhere man for the week was saved the DOD dress in the dying minutes of the game as Sean went into a meltdown mode passing to the Wycombe attack and the conceding a short corner in the dying seconds. In my life as an Oxford hockey club player we would have concede that final second goal but the three-man defence held out to see the game off.

With a cup game on Sunday a few of the team must have thought it was an eight days a week while one of the team clearly had a hard day’s night after a minor scuffle in town.

8/10/2016 Mens 1s Aylesbury Match Report

Aylesbury 2 – 4 Oxford

After assuring our Naval Officer that playing on a RAF base wouldn’t be the end of the world and the shower beers loaded in to the car the team set off. The game started well for Oxford after Bleachy the Oxford version of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just without the baby face rescued Tim’s embarrassment after hitting the post from a yard out. With Oxford dominating possession and Aylesbury being forced back into their own half our wing backs pushed high up the pitch with Guy resembling a young Lee Dixon almost getting himself on the score sheet before Bleachy put away another goal mouth scramble to make it 2-0 within ten minutes. The rest of the first half was looking a little frustrating for Oxford as a number of chances went begging but Chris rescued the half to score a Tony Yeboah screamer reverse stick shot to open his Oxford account (take note Conor).

At 3-0 at half time Oxford were hoping to put in another dominate second half display and put a big score on the board with Lawrence wanting a clean sheet performance and a return to his usual Peter Schmeichel performance opposed to last week’s more Bruce Grobbelaar effort. Sadly, the second half display wasn’t what was required with only Bleachy completing his hat trick to add to the goal tally for Oxford from what I assume must have been another goal mouth scramble. It seemed that Oxford became a little complacent with the ball and Aylesbury now in full counterattack mode had the Oxford defence over loaded and only a man of the match performance from Paul (shower beers) which reminded me of Tony Adams kept Aylesbury at bay. Two late goals were conceded as the defence found themselves overloaded. Still plenty to work on in the coming weeks chief of which must be our short corner variations.

Men’s 1s v. PHC Chiswick 1 – 27.2.16 match report

Oxford  2-3  PHC Chiswick

Ashley Holmam’s first half hat trick was enough for PHC Chiswick to take all three points in Regional 1, as Oxford paid the price for allowing Chiswick too much time on the ball.

The second half saw Oxford press hard and completely dominate but numerous chances went begging before Dan Bleach and Floris de Vos scored late on to make it 3-2. A very nervy Chiswick hung on to take all three points.

Men’s 1s v. Eastcote 1s – 6.2.16 match report

Oxford  3-4  Eastcote

Oxford men’s 1st were on the wrong side of a seven goal thriller against Eastcote 1s. Oxford raced into a two goal lead with a short corner strike from Matt McKeown and a rocket reverse shot from Connor Savage. Defensive errors cost Oxford as Eastcote replied with three goals to put Oxford under pressure. Oxford responded well and dominated large parts of the second half, and efforts from Jonny Campbell and Niall Devaney should have levelled the game before Eastcote scored a break-away goal with minutes to go. A last minute Matt McKeown short corner made the game 4-3 in Eastcote’s favour.

Men’s 1s v. Newbury & Thatcham 1s – 30.01.16 match report

Oxford  2-2  Newbury & Thatcham

Oxford 1s for the second week in a row conceded a last minute goal to draw away at Newbury & Thatcham 2-2. Dan Bleach had equalised before half time from open play after Jamie Bairstow had put Newbury ahead with a scrambled goal. A Matt McKeown drag flick short corner looked to have sealed the 3 points after Oxford had wasted numerous chances but a very late short corner from Jamie Bairstow gave Newbury a share of the spoils.
